SS-31 (Elamipretide): Mechanism & Published Research
SS-31, also known as elamipretide, MTP-131 and Bendavia, is a synthetic mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2). It binds cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Published preclinical work has examined cristae stability, membrane potential, cardiolipin oxidation, reactive oxygen species and respiratory-chain function in cardiac, renal and neurological models. A 2025 review by Tung and colleagues summarizes the structure, mechanism and study history.
Results vary by model and endpoint, and clinical studies of elamipretide have reported mixed outcomes. Research-grade material should not be equated with any clinical formulation.
