IGF-1 DES, or des(1-3)IGF-1, is a truncated form of insulin-like growth factor-1 that lacks the N-terminal tripeptide.
Early work, including a study by Ross and colleagues, found that IGF-binding proteins inhibited the activity of IGF-1 and IGF-2 in cell models but did not affect des(1-3)IGF-1. This reduced binding-protein interaction is why the variant is used in receptor and cell-culture studies.
Comparisons between IGF-1 variants depend on the binding proteins present in each model, so culture conditions should be documented carefully.
