IGF-1 LR3 (Long R3 IGF-I) is an analogue of insulin-like growth factor-1 designed to bind poorly to IGF-binding proteins. It is widely used as a cell-culture supplement in bioprocessing research.
Animal research, such as a pig study by Dunaiski and colleagues, has examined how the analogue affects growth, plasma growth hormone, IGFBP-3 and endogenous IGF-1. In that study it reduced growth and suppressed several of those markers.
Those results show that systemic effects of IGF analogues can differ from cell-culture expectations. Findings should be interpreted within each model.
